In 1996, I was invited by parents in the Potrero Hill neighborhood, to help found a preschool. We opened in the Sunday school space of St. Gregory's church. Our mission then, as it is now, is dedicated to a holistic approach where imaginative play, inquiry and a connection to the natural world assist the development of children's intellectual, artistic, physical and emotional capacities. Also central to our philosophy is a deep respect for the individuality of each child within the inclusive context of a group setting.
After moving between several temporary locations over the years, due to the hard work of many parents and board members, FOPH was able to create a home in the Dogpatch neighborhood where we have thrived since 2012.
I began my journey working with children at Magic Years, a childcare center that emphasized the idea that society at large shares in the responsibility of caring for children. I took that message to heart. I later worked at Elves Corner, a Waldorf inspired program.
It has been a true honor to know the parents of Friends of Potrero Hill and to spend my days with their children.
